The Academy of Movement and Music began unofficially in Stephanie Clemens` living room in 1971. By 1973, classes were held in a one-room storefront on South Boulevard in Oak Park. In 1977, the faculty had expanded with the growing student body (200) and the Academy incorporated and moved into three large studios and offices on Marion Street. Today the Academy houses an active preschool, Academy A.R.T.S., a large dance program, a music department, Momenta, The Doris Humphrey Society and The Doris Humphrey Memorial Theatre and the Tidmarsh Arts Foundation. There are currently more than 1,000 students taking courses here.
We have always had a commitment to quality in our faculty - not only selecting those teachers skilled and highly qualified in their own areas, but also deeply committed to the education and well-being of all of our students, no matter how young or how old, whether gifted or disabled.
The A.R.T.S. program at the Academy is a real School – an educational experience designed to carefully and systematically nurture the precious developmental years of your child. The Arts Readiness Training School at the Academy helps your child grow in a creative and stimulating learning environment.
Our primary goals are to help your child:
master basic skills
develop creative awareness
explore potential talents
foster self-confidence and
stimulate life-long interests.
The Academy believes that everyone can dance - young or adult - boy or girl - beginner or advanced - able-bodied or disabled. The experience of moving creatively to music brings joy and confidence to everyone as well as building strong and flexible bodies.
Classes are offered in:
ballet
creative movement
jazz and modern dance
Pilates and stretch.
The Academy offers music for the young child and the beginning adult, and teaches technique, theory and the love of music. Once a child has begun to show reading readiness, he or she can begin the study of piano, flute or recorder; teens whose voices have matured are ready for private voice lessons.
Our students are provided individual, one-on-one instruction.
